Happy New Year 2011 January Events

January 01 Village New Year’s Day Celebration
The annual 5k Run, Walk and Crawl is slated to start at 8 a.m. Jan. 1 at Founders Park, MM 87 bayside in Islamorada. For the less athletically minded, festivities follow with the 10 a.m. blessing of the fleet at Whale Harbor Bridge, MM 84 oceanside. Contact: 305- 853-1685

January 09 to January 10 Bartender’s Sailfish Open
An all-release boat tournament among actively-employed bartenders, this locals’ favorite challenge offers trophy awards and bragging rights to winning bars. A hilarious, yet competitive event, entry fee is $125 per bartender.

January 11 to January 12 Islamorada SailFly Championship
In this all-release boat team tournament with no more than two anglers per boat allowed, captains, mates or anglers can tease, but only the registered anglers can cast, hook and play the fish. Tournament rules will be IGFA format.

January 14 to January 16 NAMSA North American Championship & Tradewinds Midwinter OpenCat Nationals
The quiet beach at Founders Park, mile marker 87 bayside on Plantation Key, is to come alive with one of the largest winter sailing events in the U.S. as top catamaran sailors in the world arrive to race in the three-day event.

January 14 to January 16 Sailbone

January 15 Art Under The Oaks

January 19 History of Diving Museum presents: The Art of Freediving
American freediver Erin Magee will present The Art of Freediving as part the Museum’s Immerse Yourself! free program series. Magee is to present the basics of freediving and discuss how specific training and techniques can allow any novice freediver to accomplish much more than they ever imagined, and how you can get involved in freediving. Magee, a relative newcomer in the sport, broke Tanya Steeter’s longstanding US National Record in Constant Ballast with a freedive to 233 feet at the “Deja Blue” competition. Starts at 7 p.m., admission free.

January 20 to January 22 Cheeca Lodge Presidential Sailfish Tournament
The all-release tournament is an official event of the World Billfish Series, Southeast Division and the second leg of the prestigious Florida Keys Gold Cup Series. Prior to Jan. 14, angler entry fees are $695 for the first angler per boat, and additional anglers are $745 apiece. Fees increase $50 after Jan. 14.

January 24 to January 25 Al Flutie Over the Hill Rip-Off Sailfish Tournament
After more than 20 years, this event is still known to many anglers as “almost too much fun for old guys to handle.” Known locally as “The Flutie,” the sailfish tournament limits entry to anglers age 50 and over.

January 26 to January 27
Islamorada Fishing Club Sailfish Tournament
The historic fishing club offers a $30,000 winner-take-all cash prize in this high-flying challenge. Limited to 30 boats, the tournament is the third and final leg of the prestigious Florida Keys Gold Cup Series.
